The Alden Gallery will present “Wild Companions,” a show of new work by Joerg Dressler, opening Friday, August 7, 2026, at 423 Commercial St. and remaining on view through August 20. An artist’s reception will be held at the gallery, free and open to the public, on Friday, August 7, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The work of Provincetown-based painter Joerg Dressler is an exploration of impermanence, memory, and the fragile beauty of the natural world. As part of his process, Dressler juxtaposes meticulously rendered fragments of nature—recalling 19th-century landscape and still life painting—with contemporary geometric abstraction. By interrupting illusionistic space with exposed, patterned layers, Dressler creates compositions that feel both stable and fragile. These layered surfaces evoke the transience of nature while alluding to underlying physical laws, ultimately challenging the viewer’s perception of depth, form, and reality. Dressler’s intricate brushwork, writes Megan Hinton in Provincetown Arts, has “a graphic quality of illustration, per his training as a designer, paired with expressive lyricism.” His paintings set up a “tension between lush realism and surface abstraction,” says Boston Globe art critic Cate McQuaid.

In his statement for “Wild Companions,” his new solo show at the Alden Gallery, Dressler asks, “What is life without a companion? My new paintings explore the enduring bond between humans and the animals who share our lives, particularly cats and dogs. Once hunters, guardians, and protectors, they have become beloved companions whose loyalty, independence, and quiet presence shape our lives. That presence transforms the landscape into a place where instinct, memory, and emotion converge. Carl Jung believed that animals represent the instinctive, divine aspect of the human psyche, living in harmony with the natural world. At the heart of this work is companionship: the profound connection between species built on trust, unconditional love, and shared presence.”

Born in Hanau, Germany, Dressler has lived in the U.S. for the last 30 years. He received his MFA in visual communication from the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Offenbach, Germany. He also studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France. He is a recipient of the Romanos Rizk Scholarship, the AFCC 2024 Capacity-Building Grant, and was named a finalist in the 2020 Mass Cultural Council Artist Fellowships Program in Painting. His residencies include Twenty Summers, Provincetown Community Compact, and Peek-a-Boo Studios. Dressler’s work is included in the permanent collections of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, and the Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University.
