Words to live by

There are an estimated twenty-five thousand idiomatic expressions in the English language. Idioms in any language are very much informed by their respective cultures and therefore different in expression. Within one language the phrasing and the figurative or literal meanings are commonly understood. Yet, the imagery they provoke is not. When imagining idioms as visuals, we all have very different associations and will draw from various pools of symbols, colors and objects. In comparing German and English idioms I aim to uncover their humorous implications, especially when translated word-by-word.

All works are 14 x 11 inches, digital collage, 2015-2019
